How to Get a Job at a Boutique (for fashion girlies)

Hey guys!!! I know it's been like two weeks. I've been so super busy with school and getting things ready for when I leave to go home for the summer.

(kinda like my boutique!)

One of those things that I was working on was getting a Job at a really cute boutique back home. I'm actually so excited to start working there! I've been doing so much research and stuff on places near me so that I would be able to get some experience working in fashion, and thankfully I was able to secure the job! So down below I'm going to list some of the steps I took for getting my cute little boutique job (I also share some more unique tips that could help you as well)!

Steps to getting an interview

Interview Fits

How to ACE the Interview

Quick Tips I Did

_________________________________________________________________

Step one: Jobs near YOU

So this first step I feel like is the most fun one! You need to have an idea of all the boutiques that are around your area and close to you. You can do this in a few ways...

  1. Type into google Boutiques near "Your location" and browse through all the boutiques near you that you think are cute, and make a note of them somewhere.
  2. Go driving!! Take a coffee and a snack and go make a fun little solo date out of driving around your area and looking for boutiques around you (write them down somewhere so you won't forget).

Either through step one or two you'll end up with a list of boutiques/shops that you find cute or interesting. ALSO something to note DO NOT disregard a boutique or shop as an option because you think that you don't have enough experience or that they may be "too good" for you. Trust me, you never know until you send in that application. So after you get your list you're now ready to move onto the next step!

__________________________________________________

Step Two: Are they hiring???

So after you've got a good list of all the boutiques around you nows the time where you actually need to figure out if they're hiring or if they at least have a place you can apply to. You can do this by..

  1. Looking to see if they have a website and an application page on there.
  2. Calling the store and asking an employee.
  3. Or probably the best one if you're able to is to go in person and talk to someone face to face.
Trust me, I get it. It sucks to have to go into a store and ask if they're hiring and if so, where to apply. But tbh this is the best way to make yourself known as an actual person applying to the store rather than just someone submitting an application online. But this isn't mandatory at all to get the job. I actually didn't end up going into the store and I just applied online (because I was at college). But if you can do that you should because it would make you stand out from other applicants. Regardless its always best to do your research to just figure out how to apply and if and, or when they'll be hiring.

Step Three: Submitting a Resume!

This step is honestly one of the most important because it partially determines whether you get an interview or not. Submitting a good resume is SO SO SUPER IMPORTANT if you want to be seen as a good job candidate. So I'll list some things that will help you build a strong resume!

  1. ALL past work experience no matter how "insignificant" it might seem. This will help show the employer how much experience you have and why you would be an awesome addition to their team!
  2. Skill set!!! Make sure you add all your skills to the resume because this will tell the employer how skilled you are for the job!!
  3. Last but not least, References! These definitely aren't mandatory, however... They could definitely help you if your old boss wants to put in a good word.
Another thing you could include in your application which I did that I feel like rlly helps is a cover letter. A cover letter basically is just like a short two paragraphs on why you want to work at that specific job! This can rlly help you stand out and its also where you can express your enthusiasm for why you want to work at that boutique!

Heres the one I sent in!

p.s sorry its a little blurry :9

Interview Fits
Now the fun Part!! You successfully got an interview and now you need to figure out what to wear??? Well the main thing you can do is look up the companies website and check out their clothing selections and tailoring your outfit a bit around their style (still leave your style in there tho). I'll put some styling images down below of some inspo though just in case you want a little help!

How to ACE the Interview

So this last part is probably going to be the most nerve racking step (at least it was for me). If you followed the other steps then you already did a good job with looking presentable and cute and giving yourself a good reputation. Now all you need to do is talk to them and sell the deal!! I'll list a few steps down below to make sure you ACE the interview!!

  1. Show up 10 mins early. This shows the employer that you're responsible and taking the interview seriously!
  2. Prepare answers ahead of time to some things they are likely to ask. Such as, why do you want this job, tell me a little bit about yourself, why do you want to work here and so on. Being prepared for questions makes it a lot less nerve racking (trust me)!
  3. Prepare a few questions for them! This shows them that you're really interested in the company and that you want to learn more. Some things to ask could include what does a typical workday look like here, what would my schedule be like if I worked here, and even asking a more personal question to the interviewer like what they like about working at the job!
These steps will help prepare you for the interview and give you the best chance at getting the job!

__________________________________________________________________________

Quick Tips
  • Arrive to the parking lot a little early to listen to music in your car (helps get the nerves out)
  • Search up day in the life at a boutique online... Trust it motivated me to keep trying to get a job at a boutique because it looked so nice and aesthetic.
  • Find a store you really love and apply there, even if they aren't hiring they might see your application and change their mind!
  • Celebrate after by getting food because even if you didn't get the job you tried, and you deserve that meal!!

Pretty Privilege (my experience)

Pretty people receive more benefits compared to others. This is something I've personally experienced in my life that I believe is important for people to acknowledge.

In middle school and throughout out most of my earlier years in high school I would say I was pretty unconventionally attractive. To be honest I thought that I looked fine (and I was actually pretty confident). But looking back on my experiences from then until now I def. think that I was not seen as attractive by most of my peers.

Some people think pretty privilege is only as deep as holding the door open for someone vs. not for someone else, but it runs deeper than that.

During my first few years of high school when I was first starting to learn to express myself and kinda had a more alt style compared to most of the kids at my school I was alone most of the time. I was also really shy but I still think my looks played a big part in how I was treated.

For my first few years in high school I had no friends which kind of forced me to indulge deeply into the hobbies and activities I liked most (like fashion).

And guess what!

Once I started changing up my style a little bit, got my braces removed, and overall fit the more "normal" stereotype for looks, I made friends almost immediately during my junior and senior year of school.

My point of this slight backstory slop though is that once my looks were "acceptable" to societal standards I made friends, was talked to more in the hallways and class, and even got a boyfriend. But I haven't really changed much internally since then and I have found people since leaving high school that also accept my weirder side.

So honestly even now I sometimes think, what if I didn't change or "glow up" and my style stayed the same. Would I still have the friends and opportunities that I do now? Or would I still be weird and shy and lonely like I was back then.

Just something to think about before you judge someone based on their looks.

How to Build a Wardrobe on a Budget

We all want to have the perfect wardrobe, but buying a closets worth of clothes is expensive. From Hollister to Coach theres an endless supply of cute but costly clothing items. So how can you afford to look cute without dropping a band on your wardrobe?

Thrifting has become a very popular and sustainable way to shop for clothing in the recent years. If you have a goodwill or thrift store close by thats the perfect place to start shopping for an affordable wardrobe. Although because of inflation even the thrift can be a bit more expensive at times than it used to be. But trust me 60$ jeans at Hollister compared to 10$ jeans at Goodwill is still a steal.

~ Now you located a thrift shop near you and decided to head there to look for new clothes, what now?

I suggest before heading to the thrift and buying a bunch of random clothes you need to figure out what you need first. So before you do any shopping download Pinterest and make a mood board. Find a style you like and save outfits and pieces from Pinterest that you think you'd look good in. This step is important because you don't just want to buy random clothes that you'll never wear and then have to donate back to Goodwill(trust me). After thats done look at the steps below to decide what type of pieces you should be looking for.

Basics: If you've figured out what style you're looking for but have none of the clothes that go with it you should be looking for basics! Now, what are basics? Basics are the neutral toned tank tops, and t'shirts as well as jeans and pants. When you feel like you have no clothes to wear in your closet it's good to shop for some basic clothing items that you can mix and match with various outfits to give you more looks to work with. Once you have basics down you can move to the next step. I'll add some pictures of some inspo I used when looking for basics in my style.

Colors and numbers: Okay so you've got all the basics you need and now you want to add some color to your wardrobe, great! When I was trying to add more colors to my closet I followed the same criteria as I did for basics other than obviously picking out more colorful clothing. You can also try to find colors that match you and your undertones and skin-tone best (but i'll make another blog post dedicated to that)!

p.s you don't NEED colors just do what you think is best for you!

Bags: This is one of my favorite steps and things to shop for... Purses!! When you feel confident that you have a good amount of basics and colorful pieces or just enough clothes to start shopping for something else, its time to move on to bags! I feel like bags are the most fun things to shop for because they come in so many unique shapes and sizes and they can elevate your look. I recommend first finding maybe a more basic stable brown/tan bag that you can wear casually with your more laid back or everyday outfits. Then after that its up to you! there's really no one way to shop for purses and once you reach this step you'll already have a pretty good idea of what your style is. So just go find something you love!!

Statement Pieces: This step is where you can really branch out and find some really cool accessories and clothes that show off your personality and really make you stand out. From jewelry to shoes your statement pieces are going to level up your fashion game and allow you to express yourself through your clothing.

I hope you guys enjoyed reading this blog post as much as I enjoyed writing it. Hopefully this was helpful to some of you who were wondering, how to build a wardrobe on a budget!

Feel free to ask questions in the comments about your closet or give me some feedback on what you guys want me to blog about!!

A little about me...

Heyy, I'm Paige!!

Welcome to VeryVogue! I want this blog to be about fashion, style advice, current trends, thrifting, and anything else related to fashion.

A little about me -

I'm 19 almost 20 y.o and I'm finishing up my first year of college. Which I actually started out as a pre-med major and quickly realized by the second semester

That I don't want to be doing that (no offense to stem majors your awesome). So now I'm starting over and I'm going to be majoring in some sort of business major (idek what yet) and transferring to go to school back home. I'm also going to be starting a job soon (once I find one), that involves clothing or fashion in some way (currently manifesting).

So through this blog I'll be posting about my journey and experiences trying to get into the fashion industry AND different types of posts about fashion as well (I have good style I promise)!!

Thanks for taking an interest in my blog, and I hope you stay to enjoy my posts and follow me along on my journey.
