How to Get a Job at a Boutique (for fashion girlies)

Hey guys!!! I know it's been like two weeks. I've been so super busy with school and getting things ready for when I leave to go home for the summer.

(kinda like my boutique!)

One of those things that I was working on was getting a Job at a really cute boutique back home. I'm actually so excited to start working there! I've been doing so much research and stuff on places near me so that I would be able to get some experience working in fashion, and thankfully I was able to secure the job! So down below I'm going to list some of the steps I took for getting my cute little boutique job (I also share some more unique tips that could help you as well)!

Steps to getting an interview

How to ACE the Interview

Quick Tips I Did

_________________________________________________________________

Step one: Jobs near YOU

So this first step I feel like is the most fun one! You need to have an idea of all the boutiques that are around your area and close to you. You can do this in a few ways...

  1. Type into google Boutiques near "Your location" and browse through all the boutiques near you that you think are cute, and make a note of them somewhere.
  2. Go driving!! Take a coffee and a snack and go make a fun little solo date out of driving around your area and looking for boutiques around you (write them down somewhere so you won't forget).

Either through step one or two you'll end up with a list of boutiques/shops that you find cute or interesting. ALSO something to note DO NOT disregard a boutique or shop as an option because you think that you don't have enough experience or that they may be "too good" for you. Trust me, you never know until you send in that application. So after you get your list you're now ready to move onto the next step!

Step Two: Are they hiring???

So after you've got a good list of all the boutiques around you nows the time where you actually need to figure out if they're hiring or if they at least have a place you can apply to. You can do this by..

  1. Looking to see if they have a website and an application page on there.
  2. Calling the store and asking an employee.
  3. Or probably the best one if you're able to is to go in person and talk to someone face to face.
Trust me, I get it. It sucks to have to go into a store and ask if they're hiring and if so, where to apply. But tbh this is the best way to make yourself known as an actual person applying to the store rather than just someone submitting an application online. But this isn't mandatory at all to get the job. I actually didn't end up going into the store and I just applied online (because I was at college). But if you can do that you should because it would make you stand out from other applicants. Regardless its always best to do your research to just figure out how to apply and if and, or when they'll be hiring.

Step Three: Submitting a Resume!

This step is honestly one of the most important because it partially determines whether you get an interview or not. Submitting a good resume is SO SO SUPER IMPORTANT if you want to be seen as a good job candidate. So I'll list some things that will help you build a strong resume!

  1. ALL past work experience no matter how "insignificant" it might seem. This will help show the employer how much experience you have and why you would be an awesome addition to their team!
  2. Skill set!!! Make sure you add all your skills to the resume because this will tell the employer how skilled you are for the job!!
  3. Last but not least, References! These definitely aren't mandatory, however... They could definitely help you if your old boss wants to put in a good word.
Another thing you could include in your application which I did that I feel like rlly helps is a cover letter. A cover letter basically is just like a short two paragraphs on why you want to work at that specific job! This can rlly help you stand out and its also where you can express your enthusiasm for why you want to work at that boutique!

Heres the one I sent in!

p.s sorry its a little blurry :9

Interview Fits
Now the fun Part!! You successfully got an interview and now you need to figure out what to wear??? Well the main thing you can do is look up the companies website and check out their clothing selections and tailoring your outfit a bit around their style (still leave your style in there tho). I'll put some styling images down below of some inspo though just in case you want a little help!

How to ACE the Interview

So this last part is probably going to be the most nerve racking step (at least it was for me). If you followed the other steps then you already did a good job with looking presentable and cute and giving yourself a good reputation. Now all you need to do is talk to them and sell the deal!! I'll list a few steps down below to make sure you ACE the interview!!

  1. Show up 10 mins early. This shows the employer that you're responsible and taking the interview seriously!
  2. Prepare answers ahead of time to some things they are likely to ask. Such as, why do you want this job, tell me a little bit about yourself, why do you want to work here and so on. Being prepared for questions makes it a lot less nerve racking (trust me)!
  3. Prepare a few questions for them! This shows them that you're really interested in the company and that you want to learn more. Some things to ask could include what does a typical workday look like here, what would my schedule be like if I worked here, and even asking a more personal question to the interviewer like what they like about working at the job!
These steps will help prepare you for the interview and give you the best chance at getting the job!

Quick Tips
  • Arrive to the parking lot a little early to listen to music in your car (helps get the nerves out)
  • Search up day in the life at a boutique online... Trust it motivated me to keep trying to get a job at a boutique because it looked so nice and aesthetic.
  • Find a store you really love and apply there, even if they aren't hiring they might see your application and change their mind!
  • Celebrate after by getting food because even if you didn't get the job you tried, and you deserve that meal!!
